POVERTY AND POPULATION

The various types of businesses that are known to be polluting are those that believe that since in the under developed countries are poor, they have no restrictions like in other countries like the United States which has measures in place to prevent businesses from doing anything they feel like doing to the environment. These third world countries are most of the times left to decide on whether to choose the environment or to look after what they will be getting from these businesses. The question is what you think they are having as a choice. People sometimes use others because they are in a situation in which they cannot help themselves. The developed world (western countries) are taking advantage of the under developed countries (Norbert, 2012).

A business as an agent of morality has a duty to fulfill to the community or the society; this means duties of the business. These duties are not only limited to manufacturing quality goods and services at affordable costs. They also have the mandate to maintain the cleanliness of the environment and free from all sorts toxic materials that are generated as a result of the manufacturing activities.

All companies are expected to safeguard the environment from dilapidation as a result of their manufacturing process of goods and services. It is ethically and morally right for business to defend the environment against harmful and toxic gasses that are released to the air and waste chemicals directed to the rivers, oceans and lakes.  The subject of pollution with no limits is not much in the western countries because there is governmental restriction on environmental pollution. These governments make up an agency the will be responsible to enforce these regulations, for instance, in the US there is environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is responsible for pollution control. In contrast the third world countries have no restrictions in regards to controlling environmental pollution, and even when these laws are available; there is no adequate machinery to put them into effect (Norbert, 2012).

Suggest the reasons a business may conduct operations in a third world country and disregard any standards of pollution control.

The developed countries use these third world countries to plunk their garbage and other dangerous wastes. The developed world companies will take their projects into these countries and construct factories which will in turn pollute their air; this is as a result of less or totally no restrictive laws to deal with as compared to what they would have to deal with at home. Most of the intercontinental companies the manufacture hazardous chemicals are looked as overly unsafe in the developed world unlike its counterpart who will gladly accept them and even give them room to start up these companies. Most governments cannot stop the production of these kinds of chemicals because they are trying to create work opportunities for their citizens.

Countries in Eastern Europe, Asia, Latin America and Africa are the ones that these companies take their factories to due to their environmental unfairness.  The under developed countries have many problems apart from problems created by industrialization and development. They also have to put up with environmental problems caused circumstances such as war and poverty. There are several environmental problems that are found in the under developed countries and these include; water pollution, air pollution, soil erosion, deforestation, poisoning the environment, desertification among others (Norbert, 2012).             

It has been said that pollution is the price of progress. Assess the connections between economic progress and development, on the one hand, and pollution controls and environmental protection, on the other.

Economic growth can be defined as the increase in the amount of goods and services produced by a country in a given duration of time. It is usually calculated as the percentage rate of raise in the gross domestic production (GDP). While development can is defined as the process of progressing or growing of a nation.

The world today has been divided into developed, developing and under developed countries. And the idea behind it is to move one stage to the other. But the uncertainty lies in this progression of moving from under developed to developed countries.

The relationship between development and economic growth is that Statistics shows that good number developed countries have a higher growth domestic product per capita. Growth domestic product per capita is got by the GDP by the population size of a given country. The growth of the growth domestic product could be as a result from growth in earnings of the richest individuals in the community, with the income a bigger percentage remaining unchanged. In fact there are most of the people argue that in several countries economic growth is connected with rising heights of development. Economies raise and develop; they get bigger and move forward, as they become more prosperous (Gregory, 2007).

The economic development of a given society or country is often associated with raise in incomes and related increase in savings, investments and consumption. Indeed, there is more to a country’s development than just income growth; for if the allocation very much high development may not be achieved.

Support the argument that human beings have a moral right to a livable environment regardless of the country they live in.

Pollution control would call for reuse of something again. Things like aluminum cans, newspapers, glass jars can be recycled and used elsewhere for so0mething beneficial. The recycling industry is estimated to have more jobs as compared to waste disposal. With recycling businesses are required to collect, heave and process that which can be recycled from the collected materials.

According to Norbert, (2012) he defines pollution as the introduction of unwanted materials in to the environment which in turn causes instability, harm, disorder, discomfort to the living organism in the environment. He further adds that pollution can take various forms of energy or chemical substances such as heat, light energy or noise.

Human rights can be defined as unique kind of unchallengeable moral prerogative. They are attached to all individuals equally, by the being human, irrespective of nationality, membership to a certain group or race. They state the minimum and maximum conditions for human decorum and acceptable life. The first age group of political and civil rights limits what others might do, for instance, liberty, life, and freedom from torture. Then second generation included the economic and social rights which imposed on the government. The third generation advocated for things like development, peace and humanitarian support. Today there is right to live in a livable environment regardless of the nation they come from (Curtis, 2006).

The environment is a place where all human being stay and there is no way to avoid that. All human beings are entitled to all live in a safe environment in regardless from the country they live in. It is important for all individuals to get environmental conditions are favorable to live in without any problems. In the United States there is the right to a healthy earth.

Take a position on whether wealthy nations have an obligation to provide poorer nations with, or help them develop, greener industries and sources of energy. Explain your rationale.

My position on whether the developed nations have obligations to the under developed countries is that they are obligated to help them develop, sources of energy and greener industry because of the following reasons;

The developed world should be responsible for helping under developed world in to achieve developed world. The help should be in terms of grants for development. These grants should be monitored to get a solution to these countries lagging behind (Curtis, 2006).

Propose a plan for uniform global pollution control standards and how you would enforce them.

They should have positive steps; developed countries can benefit under developed countries specifically by taking stern actions against any leader who is corrupt and supports corrupt governance, assisting in development and research to enhance worldwide labor mobility. Governance is the most challenging part in third world countries especially Africa.  Corrupt leaders and the poor regime have arguably are the most significant parties in the delay of African development.

The developed countries needs new priorities, the western countries through new priorities they will be able to come up with new strategies that will help the under developed countries to move from their current state to developing then finally to developed. This will be a win – win situation for all.

The international community that should be gives easy access to international trade. This will allow these countries to acquire what they do not have and also export what they have in large quantities hence development will come to these countries. Most of the western countries have developed because of trade amongst themselves. Trade will help these countries bring development to their own back yard and this will help make this countries reach developing status.

The first option that I would propose is mechanism geared towards reduction of environmental pollution. Manufacturing and consumption of goods and services usually results to benefits or costs than the sellers and buyers. The industries are expected to reduce the emersion of toxins to the air and the environment in rivers and lakes. This will make a safer world for everyone.

Have a worldwide environmental standard; this would provide regulations to control environmental pollution and have in place authorities to enforce these kinds of law. The regulations must be adhered to without failure; any country that goes against them should given strict conditions in the global world to have it as an example to the others.

Have a common carbon emission target that all countries should adhered to, this will help reduce the amount of carbon released to the air, as a result reducing the depletion of the ozone layer. The limit to carbon emission should be specific and for all the countries.

Introduce the economics of pollution control; this is having a great penalty for those countries that produces the largest emission in the world. This will make countries and companies that do this to reduce on their carbon emission. This will only permit the release of gas that is not harmful to the environment.

In conclusion, countries and companies have the mandate to maintain the cleanliness of the environment and free from all sorts toxic materials that are generated as a result of the manufacturing activities.

Self-Realization And Its Benefits

This paper is a reflection paper; it is mainly composed of what we have learnt. In my case it is about what I have learnt on the three cause books. In this paper I would cite my reactions, analysis of the experiences learnt and feelings. It is more personal as compared to other assignment.

There are several personal and interpersonal benefits of gratitude.  Whereas gratefulness has a long history according to most theologians and philosophers, it was not until the 21^st century that the field of psychology started to give gratitude its most required and deserved  practical relevance to our daily lives. Dr. Emmons is the person behind the scientific advancement of gratitude. In its simplest definitions, gratitude is a helpful or positive answer to a benefit. But their interconnected outcome arrives at well beyond those linked to politeness. It is of great importance the research done and evaluated by Dr. Emmons portrays that gratitude improves physical and emotional health, as well as fosters good relationship and develops communities. The emotional side of gratitude includes consciousness of a positive advantage that is developed from an outside source and is not usually deserved or earned. Self opening to the experience of gratitude and with intent expressing it to other people benefit everyone around you, (Adam and Francesca, 2010).

I would say that I am morally elevated. Through the great work of Dr. Emmons I got to learn the way of improving my mood. Whenever am bored or my moods are low, it is through the thought of gratitude makes me come back to my normal joyful thoughts. It is through the good thought of gratitude that I endeavor to keep a positive health which involves positive living; psychological health and having much sleep that makes me stay grateful for life and all that is around me.

I have understood that experience and expression of gratefulness or gratitude by an individual tends to motivates others to show gratitude to others too hence having a virtuous sequence in progress, it also brings in a reciprocal behavior. This makes it very easy to live amongst your friends, neighbors and family.

            The effect of self realization and its benefits would be ultimately aided by the supreme aim of my personal life. Gratitude can make someone have a sense of belonging; through gratitude of an individual gets the feeling of belonging to a society. When an individual does not show gratitude to fellow humans the end result is the same as no one would like to be associated with that kind of person hence the person will be lonely in that place. While someone who has gratitude to others in the society will be missed at one single point whenever not there, hence the feeling of connection to others in the community.  

            I have learnt that through gratitude a person can increase performance at work place. There is a connection between the gratitude and cognitive functioning, in that when someone is grateful to others they develop their abilities and in the work place their ability to work is developed on the positive side. Their skills at the workplace increase because of the positive attributes they get from fiends they show gratitude to. Some of the listed 10 characteristics that distinguish determination are as follows. The ten are building the community, stewardship, foresight, healing awareness, empathy, conceptualization, listening, empathy and commitment to the growth of people. Unfortunately, his inference is based entirely on what he gleaned from reading Dr. Emmons book.

            Self realization is driven into someone’s inner self through what happens after you have been grateful, gratitude gives you the energy to move through everyday life and also to gives you high state of alertness in the way things are done around you. An individual becomes more alert to what is taking place around and about him, it’s the way you show gratitude that makes you alert because you want to know what has just happened in your close environment. The last thing is determination, gratitude emphasizes on determination. The effect of being grateful is the zeal for determination on the things we do.

Self realization makes an individual have great ideas when leading an organization and these ideas include the following; the best attribute of leadership is listening. A leader who has gratitude you would have deep commitment to listen carefully to others. Listening is also including getting in touch with an individual’s own inner voice and seeking to understand one’s body, mind and spirit are communicating. Listening, together with normal periods of suggestion, is necessary to the growth of the servant leader. For instance in the case of the John Hopkins Corporation where the manager has a lot of gratitude, gave a listening ear for over two hours and after that he made what he got from the meeting into practice and the company made some improvement in production and profits.

The benefit of self realization can take any form including recognizing emotions and self recognition and in others is it is brought by intelligence and alertness which is the effect of gratitude in most cases. It also involves the person knowing the way emotions unfold and why that is so. According to Dr. Emmons emotional at the very center of human being lies emotional intelligence. This is to say that the people who are capable of regulation of their emotions, then they can successfully create environments filled with fairness and trust. Findings by Lester and Bower show that the perceptions of the leaders trust in their subordinates are positively related to their job satisfaction and performance. When subordinates feel they are trusted, they will go beyond their call of duty and work harder while at the same time are more satisfied with their jobs. While a verbal comment always considers the sentiments, a written note will be of great value in comparison. This is evident that gratitude plays a big role in our daily lives.

When you ready A Path with Heart, answers all questions apart from those that must be experienced. The writer gives a very strong advice, and articulates, humor, patience, intelligence and wise.  In the book the author starts with his own personal experience just to show emphasis, he goes further to include the basis of vipassana meditation and then leads you step by step slowly into the deepest issues of personal meditation and what a spiritual seeker must do or face. What I find most interesting both hi presentation is that he provides moderate, practical advice on our daily life activities, minute by minute explanation on what to do to investigate, commit to, following the right path.

In considering the spiritual life, an individual must make sure that the path we take is connected to with our hearts, this according to the author and a Buddhist monk known as Kornfield. This was in the early 1974 long before it came into being popular in the 1990s; Kornfield has been doing his teaching to western countries how to integrate the Easter teachings into their daily lives.  The reason why this book is so helpful to our daily lives is because he uses everyday metaphors to explain the indescribable teachings of spiritual transformation (Kornfiel, 1993). For instance, he opens by the single seat lesson taught o him by his inspired teacher. Looking at its literal meaning sitting in the center of an empty room and not being moved or swayed by all those who are around you and the drama that accompanies, on a spiritual context it would mean sticking with a single belief among all of the possible happenings. Inwardly it would mean the determination to stick to that belief throughout even when doubts and difficulties arise until there is true clarity and understanding of what is taking place.  The same could be attributing to this book it is very good self help spiritual book that can only lead to greater personal understanding and clarity.

According to me this book by A Path with Heart, I am confidence that the book will help in giving practical on how an individual can live a spiritual life and amazing mysterious metaphors of super-normal circumstances. There are various pages within the book that talk directly of “gems” that speaks of the different personal experience and struggles, it also show great sense of humor and with compassion. One of the elements that have attracted me to Buddhism is the relativism of lack of dogmatism and superstition. The fundamental lessons are down-to-earth, practical, and completely acceptable to a person who believes in science more than any other thing. Still, many Buddhists consider in re-embodiment, and Kornfield explains some attractive far out understanding involving, for instance, angelic beings, reincarnation, and intuitive powers.

The role of love in self realization is that which make an improvement on the quality of our lives.  But yet a big number of people do not know how much self realization can contribute to the quality of our daily lives. Love helps each one of us to achieve self realization. According to Dean (1998), he shows that the real pandemic in contemporary culture is not only substantial heart disease but also what he terms as spiritual heart disease:  isolation, loneliness, depression and alienation. He portrays how the defenses that we also take to be protecting us from emotional pain are over and over again the same that in point of fact heightens our pain and pressure our survival. Dr. Ornish summarizes eight passageways to healing and intimacy that have equipped a thoughtful difference in his life and this book has helped change the life of millions of others in changing suffering into joy, unhappiness into happiness.

When you take a close look and review the book it gives the best stress management to having a healthy heart.  Ornish now persevere that the for the most part powerful influences on health are intimacy and love. The founder of the Protective Medicine Research Institute says he knows of no other aspects not diet, not exercise, not smoking, not genetics, not stress, not surgery, not drugs, that has such a major effect on our incidence of illness, quality of life, and untimely death resulting from all causes.'' After supporting the healing role of love and intimacy we find that love contributes greatly towards self realization in all human beings. Ornish looks at inward and explains his own passage to openness. He uses these self eye-openers with the discussion of love and intimacy facilitating strategies. He goes further to presents a usual work out in communication skills and for a short time discusses the assessment of human being having touch, the practice of contemplation, the sense of promise, and the responsibility of spiritual practices and psychiatric therapy in building of the sense of self with the intention of is a precondition to achieving relationship.

The healing power of love is greatly explained by Dr. Ornish illustrate that intimacy and relationship could be the best way that we live and evaluate our lives. He adds that how simple choices are in life are of great importance in our life and can be a powerful change in our well being and health and suggested stages that could be followed to reserve heart diseases and live a healthier  and much better life.

“The Legend of the Sathya Sai Baba” in literal English means “the master of good name”. The reason why I chose this story is because it is profound in that in the story Buber gives a comprehensive, sensitive and intuitive vivid description of Hasidism.  It is an eye opener; the story is not only a collection of stories on how modern Hasidism started but also acts as a clarification of demystify the deep mystery about Judaism. It gives reflection of recent history. The language used is poetic and teaches on how to be a good writer and also give you the ability to the think critical in order to understand it. When you read this book there is some life experience that an individual gains through inspiring stories that brings the change in humans.

Self acknowledgement is the event that an individual comes to think about their personal being, the realization from the view of the continuing hunt of humans for comfort, which is highly independent of their purpose. The main lesson that I have learnt over the duration of my course has brought me an eye opener, the main thing that can change for us is who we are and what could be destroy our abilities to that we run into a comparative scenario.

            When a person has realized him or herself, there is how he or she acts in the society. In the society leadership is usually looked at as a significant variable that affects the community. Whereas the notion has been studied at length, there is still a lot to be discovered in relation to how leadership is affecting variables like organization performance, culture and climate. According to Hawkins (2006) he explained that a servant and a leader is that servants aspire to serve and taking up leadership as a result of serving.  Leadership is defined as a person who rules, inspires or guides others. For one to be considered as a servant, the person must lead in a way that shows service to other by developing them and also giving their complete attention to their work mates and those they serve.

Change in attitude is one of the ways through which a person who has passed through this course and read the three books will act. Attitude is fundamental important if adequately taken care of in a leader. A proper understanding of the reflexes created by attitude exemplifies the major market trends and this envisions future capacity building in the organization. In addition to that, the inclusion of proper decision making system would improve consumer attitude towards proper prices, proper market capacities and response towards price changes. In view of the utilitarian, they look at penalty or a greater good for a big number of people. Utilitarian is known to be in support of morally up right actions is the act that results into most good. They believe in individuality in people and the society is a net product of the individual choices that people make (Stephen, 2011).

An individual particular leadership style that comes from gratitude is greatly influenced by the person’s interior value, and the assumptions and beliefs. The most efficient leaders incessantly learn from the people around them and build their style of leadership as needed to contain the changing situation and diversity. Potent leaders actually posses a combination of distinctiveness and moral values which in the long run defines the leadership philosophy. Leadership stresses on skills such as stewardship, awareness, growth, building the community and persuasion. Being grateful to other people is one of main things that people do to become a better leader in the society (Ruth 2005).

In real sense faith is necessary for self realization; It is of great importance to know that self awareness and emotional intelligence does not include merely being good, it is actually entails honestly face a person about a difficult situation and showing gratitude to others. It also includes managing feelings so that they are expressed effectively and appropriately. Emotional intelligence and self awareness skills allow individuals in the society or work place to work together towards a common goal. Emotional intelligence is dynamic and develops throughout an individual’s life, it is already learnt and goes on to expand as one go through life. With the experience at work place ones emotional intelligence continues to grow. As you live life, you turn out to be more skilled at honing your understanding and social skillfulness (Robert, 2008).

Leadership is actually a philosophy that puts emphasis on moral values and proposes leaders get required outcomes by focusing on and accomplishing the wants of others, this is the same case for other religions and philosophies, though not all. The core of leadership is having efficient ways to motivate and inspire others. An individual particular style of leadership is greatly influenced by the person’s interior value, and the assumptions and beliefs. The most efficient leaders incessantly learn from the people around them and build their style of leadership as needed to contain the changing situation and diversity. Potent leaders actually posses a combination of distinctiveness and moral values which in the long run defines the leadership philosophy. Leadership now reflecting what you have learned of self-realization, sustainability and well-being is through looking at our Emotional ability is a cultured capability pedestal on emotional intelligence that can lead to exceptional relations that will have a positive outcome on those around you. Understanding, which engages precisely interpretation the approaches of other and social skills, which allows for the clever management of those feelings, is at the peak of emotional capabilities (Ruth 2005). Our emotional intelligence is the key to our possible skills as physician. Being good at serving one’s patients is an emotional capability based on understanding. Trustworthiness is an ability that is based on self ruling. Both of these competencies are serious in serving to make one an outstanding the work mates.

In conclusion the reading and education has led to the development and growth of the human brain. It gives us the ability to know. Through this course and the reading of the three books I have learnt a lot that is life changing from being grateful in life and also showing others gratitude, to how love helps us develop our self realization and the book helps us know on  how make leadership reflection of self –realization, sustainability and well being. For instance, faith is necessary for self realization, It is of great importance to know that self awareness and emotional intelligence does not include merely being good, it is actually entails honestly face a person about a difficult situation and showing gratitude to others. I have learnt that self-realization helps us in self development and how we relate to other people around us.

Thinking as a Hobby

In William Golding's essay "Thinking as a Hobby," he relates the three levels of thinking to different statuettes including the Venus of Milo, the Leopard, and Rodin's Thinker. At the beginning of the essay, Golding shares with his audience of the first time he laid eyes on these statuettes in his headmaster's office. Throughout his early childhood he believed that the beautiful Venus of Milo was eternally panicked, the Leopard was crouching low so he could be ready to pounce on a filing cabinet, and that Rodin's Thinker was wallowing in extreme misery. It is later in his life that he realizes these statuettes mean something entirely different. Throughout his essay, he reveals that the Leopard, who is nature, represents grade three thinkers. This group of people, embodying the majority of the world, tends to have "natural instincts," where they act and use their feelings instead of thinking for themselves. Just as a pack of leopards travel together and mimic each others moves, so do grade three thinkers. According to Golding, these kind of thinkers have thoughts that are full of unconscious prejudice, ignorance, and hypocrisy. After describing grade three thinkers, William Golding moves on to discuss grade-two thinkers. He indirectly compares it to the statuette Venus of Milo. Venus of Milo, though beautiful and aware that her bath towel is falling, fails to do anything about her situation. She is the epitome of contradictions, just as grade-two thinkers are. 

This group of people, as Golding explains, begins to think for themselves, but fails to act on their own thoughts, contradicting themselves. In the same way, the author shares his stories of Mr. Houghton, who taught his boys to live a clean life and be virtuous, but craned his neck every time he saw a girl pass by his window. Lastly, Golding changes his original thought that Rodin's Thinker was about a man in great misery to a man to believing that the statuette represented pure thought. In this same way, William Golding reveals that grade-three thinkers are people of pure thought. Not only do they think for themselves, but they also act on their own actions. Rodin's Thinker represents a group of people who are few and far between, people who are thoughtful thinkers. The statuettes Golding represents the different levels of thought that he describes. He uses these objects as symbols to better connect to the reader.

In the first section of his essay, William Golding describes how he perceived the statuettes to be in relation to one another. His original belief as a child was that these statuettes were either frozen in pain or misery or ready to pounce over filing cabinets filled with student information. In his conclusion, Golding states that he would rearrange the statuettes by putting Venus of Milo aside, because he had come to love her, just as he had with grade two thinkers, Rodin's Thinker where shadows lay before him, and the leopard crouched and ready to spring behind the man sunk in his desperate thought. The second image is more consistent with how I would believe the statuettes to be positioned. Based on my perception of these statuettes and the meaning behind them, I would first place the leopard in the absolute center of everything because this animal represents the majority of the population, those who don't think, but act on their obnoxious, prejudiced, and ignorant feelings.The leopard, like Golding stated in his revised positioning of these statuettes, would be glaring at his prey, Rodin's Thinker, ready to pounce. Rodin's Thinker would be off to the leopard's side, hidden beneath the shadows that loomed over him as he struggled in the world that would only skim the surface in their thoughts. Finally, the Venus of Milo would be pushed to the background, gazing upon the other statuettes. Though her beauty would be shown, the hesitation of putting her thoughts into actions is what was keeping her from being in the limelight.

Being An Engineer

Surely, being an engineer calls for more than just solve technical problems. It is in this point of view that to be successful in any course demands total attention of the student both in class work and in other related exercises. In addition, through practical oriented studies students are able to develop new dimensions of understanding the subject and hence new methods of improving technology. I would like to be exposed to a real working platform as a student in that each end every time we are exposed to a formula or working with a device/equipments/machines such as computers, then they should be practically demonstrated as a practical lesson. Most theoretical aspects of teaching, if possible, as elaborated in the textbooks should be brought in to reality rather than being taught theoretically. On the other hand, I would like to be subjected to real working environment like schools and colleges for internships to be in a position to apply my skills and knowledge at work while at the same time gaining working experience.

Taking, I am very well versed with mathematics both at theoretical and practical levels. Thus as part of my extra-curricular I worked about 10 hours a week at the math lab in my college in the fall semester, and I am intending to do the same in the following spring semester. This will be helpful in advancing my teaching and social skills. It was my second semester at college, only after 6 months that I moved to the U.S. and English was my second language, my dominance over the field of mathematics greatly helped me in transferring knowledge and vividly explaining math problems to my students. This Understanding the fact that I can easily apply my learnt knowledge to make life of students better has made me feel fulfilled. This has motivated and inspired me to advance my studies to the doctorate level, so that later on I can become a professor in a reputable university. This I believe will offer an opportunity to serve the world society.
